back 2 the beats - surf 107.2 brighton - krafty kuts and phat lace loyd
From about '97 to 2000 I was at Uni in Brighton and in my last year or so down there I came to discover the legend that is Martin Reeves, aka Krafty Kuts. A mate had bought Slam the Breaks On sorta on a whim and it hadn't left the stereo since it arrived in the house, so when we heard he played a Wednesday night gig at the Funky Buddha we knew we were onto a winner.
Still recall walking in there for the first time and hearing Gimme the Funk, a classic riff that I'll probably be humming during my last few minutes on this earth. Well, either that or his rip off of the Rocky theme tune.
Anyway, it's only about 5 years since Krafty was just like any other mere mortal and not the superstar DJ he is today - he ran his little record shop in the North Lanes, worked hard with his mates on promoting his club night (Charged), not too big to work on the door taking our cash and stuff like that. In addition to this had a slot on the local radio station at some ungodly hour on Saturday nights / Sunday mornings. These are a few recordings I managed to get (had one more but a mate lost it - have just about forgiven him).
It's not big on the DJing, though there's a little scratching here and there, just a novelty I guess to hear his voice and hear something a little different. Good choonz though. One of the mixes isn't his though, it's Phat Lace Loyd aka Skool of Thought. And unfortunately one of them's only 1/2 the show - left it recording after I went to bed and my mate turned it off when he got in and turned everything off.... :-p
Enjoy.
